Common mistakes in DTF textile & DTF UV (and how to avoid them)

Even with a good printer and transfers, certain errors can ruin the final result in DTF textile or DTF UV printing. Bad file, wrong temperature, poorly prepared substrate… the good news is that these problems are common, and therefore easy to avoid once you know about them.

This guide compiles the most frequent errors in DTF textile and DTF UV, with the following for each:

  • the probable cause;
  • the symptom (what you see on the result);
  • the solution to correct it and prevent it from happening again.

1. File-related errors (textile & UV)

Low-resolution files (blurry or pixelated)

Symptom: blurry print, indistinct outlines, "pixel" effect on the pattern.
Cause: low resolution image (e.g. 72 dpi or from a screenshot).
Solution: work at 300 dpi ( 400 to 500 dpi for UV) at the final size, with clean files (PNG, AI or PDF).

RGB files instead of CMYK

Symptom: colors different from what you see on the screen (duller, darker or shifted).
Cause: file prepared in RGB, while the print uses CMYK + white inks.
Solution: prepare your files in CMYK (except PNG) , check your color profiles before exporting.

Non-transparent or poorly managed background

Symptom: a square/background appears around the logo, whereas you thought you had a "transparent" background.
Cause: white background or color embedded in the file, poor layer management or incorrectly applied mask.
Solution: Check that the background is actually transparent in your software and export as PNG with transparency if necessary.

Lines too thin and small details that disappear

Symptom: some lines or small elements do not print well.
Cause: Line thickness too thin or details too small for the medium.
Solution: keep a minimum line thickness (generally ≥ 0.5 pt) and avoid unnecessary micro-details.

2. Installation errors in DTF textiles

Incorrect temperature or pressing time

Symptom: transfer that partially peels off, print that does not hold up to washing, or on the contrary, textile that yellows/shines.
Possible causes: temperature too low, time too short, or conversely temperature too high on certain fabrics (sensitive polyester, softshell...).
Solution: respect the recommended temperatures and durations according to the textile , and adapt for sensitive fabrics.

Insufficient or uneven pressure

Symptom: some areas stick well, others do not, or some edges lift up.
Cause: pressure too low or poor pressure distribution on the press.
Solution: Increase the pressure, check the flatness of the press and ensure that the textile is completely flat.

Damp or softened fabric

Symptom: printing that adheres poorly, cracks or peels off quickly.
Cause: textile still containing moisture or treated with fabric softener.
Solution: pre-press for a few seconds to remove moisture and avoid using fabric softener before marking.

Forgetting to do the second pressing (DTF textile)

Symptom: slightly grainy surface, sticky print, reduced durability.
Cause: lack of a second pressing to seal the ink and smooth the surface.
Solution: perform a second pressing (4 to 6 seconds) with finishing sheet after removing the film.

All these points are detailed in our official DTF textile installation guide .

3. DTF UV Installation Errors

Surface not cleaned or degreased

Symptom: sticker peeling off at the edges, poor adhesion, small areas bubbling.
Cause: dust, grease or residue (fingers, glue, old marking) on the object.
Solution: Thoroughly clean the surface with a suitable product (isopropyl alcohol or mild non-greasy cleaner) before installation.

Incompatible surface (too grainy or flexible)

Symptom: poor adhesion, print that does not stick or tears during application.
Cause: surface too rough, flexible or with a non-stick treatment (e.g. some rubbers, silicone, highly textured surfaces).
Solution: favor smooth, rigid and clean surfaces (glass, metal, rigid plastic, acrylic, varnished wood, etc.).

Air bubbles and creases

Symptom: visible bubbles under the sticker, creases, gaps.
Cause: too rapid application without progressive smoothing.
Solution: apply the sticker gradually , smoothing it from the center outwards with a squeegee or a card.

No rest time after the application

Symptom: sticker that peels off more easily just after application, especially on surfaces that are under stress.
Cause: excessive handling or rubbing after installation.
Solution: ideally, let it rest for 24 hours before intensive use, for maximum adhesion.

4. Errors related to the choice of medium

Using DTF textiles on objects (and vice versa)

Symptom: incompatible finish, poor adhesion, non-lasting result.
Cause: confusion between textile DTF and UV DTF.
Solution: Use DTF textiles only on compatible textiles, and DTF UV for rigid objects. To understand the difference, see our comparison of DTF textiles vs. DTF UV .

Incompatible textile or object

Symptom: transfer that does not adhere well, that peels off, or degraded visual appearance.
Cause: choice of a support that is too extreme (fabric that is too fluffy, object that is too grainy, silicone surface, etc.).
Solution: check the compatibility of the textile or object before launching a full series and, if possible, test on a sample.

5. Storage and washing errors

Storage of transfers under poor conditions

Symptom: transfers more difficult to apply, reduced adhesion, less effective powder.
Cause: storage in a humid, very hot place or exposed to direct sunlight.
Solution: Store your DTF boards flat, in a dry place, away from excessive heat and direct light.

Washing textiles not suitable

Symptom: print quality that fades or deteriorates too quickly.
Cause: washing too hot, intensive tumble drying, ironing directly on the design.
Solution: preferably wash at 30°C, inside out, and avoid tumble drying at high temperature or ironing directly on the transfer.

FAQ – Common problems in DTF textiles & UV

My DTF (direct-to-feed) product is peeling off after a few washes, what should I do?

Check the ironing settings (temperature, time, pressure) and the type of fabric being used. Also, make sure that the washing instructions are followed (30°C, inside out, no intensive tumble drying).

Is DTF UV dishwasher safe?

We recommend hand washing to maximize the lifespan of the marking. Some items can withstand occasional dishwasher cycles, but this is more aggressive on the sticker.

My colors don't exactly match the screen, is that normal?

Yes, screens use RGB while printing uses CMYK. A slight difference is normal. To minimize discrepancies, work in CMYK and use properly profiled images.

Do I need to use a specific press for DTF textiles?

A good quality heat press is recommended to ensure a stable temperature and even pressure. For textile application, please refer to our recommendations in the DTF textile application guide .

I don't know if my project should be DTF textile or DTF UV, what should I do?

The rule is simple: textiles → DTF textile , rigid objects → DTF UV . If you're unsure, our comparison of DTF textiles vs. DTF UV can help you decide.
